The Consultation for ‘Plug-in Solar’ was released on in June 2026, and is currently open. You can see more information on this update here: Plug-in solar: Regulatory Amendment and Interim Product Specification
The Government is keen to ensure that many consumers have access to the benefits that solar generation has to offer and the proposals in this consultation are intended to enable this.
It includes a section on Solar PV systems that can be installed by simply plugging them into a UK Plug socket. It is likely that the German model will be followed (800W limit), and as such a kit like the Storm 710W Plug In Solar Kit would be suitable*
One of the actions set out in the Consultation is to investigate the safety of this technology, which is currently banned in the UK but widely used in other countries, including Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
To make Solar PV systems more widely available, particularly to those living in properties where conventional rooftop installations are not possible, these Plug-in Solar panels will allow a quick and easy installation, at a much lower cost.
Early estimates indicate that these regulations will be ratified by September-October 2026.
As it stands the UK regulations do not allow these types of plug-in Solar PV systems to be used in the UK, which is why we sell our DIY Solar Kits with the proviso that you can install the system yourself, but the final connection of the Solar kit to the grid is made and signed off by a qualified electrician.
We are looking forward to the government’s findings, and will of course update our website and product listings as soon as we know more.
*Based on current estimates, This will be confirmed when the regulations have been ratified.
